SUNSHINE COAST
February 2021 - April 2024
Covering the land between two waters
(Not an island)
The Sunshine Coast is accessed by either ferry or seaplane, and in that distance lies both its challenges and appeal.
As a reporter for the weekly Coast Reporter newspaper and its daily website, I’ve covered the region from Langdale to Egmont (and several islands). Whether it’s local politics or marine protection or search and rescue efforts — and breaking news as it happens — I informed the community. And, of course, worked on the odd story about the legacy of the Beachcombers in its hometown.

Regenerative farm
My solutions journalism feature (with support from Journalists for Human Rights) focuses on a grassroots project taking root in the heart of Sechelt.
Marine Reporting
Some of my favourite stories to report are whale sightings and events. From the large grey whales to the mysterious death of a rare fin whale, I like a deep dive into marine storytelling. Sometimes I end up in the water to watch the release of a giant Pacific octopus.
Feature Highlight
For a 2022 issue of Coast Life magazine, I wrote about the Merry Island lighthouse — one of the few in Canada that is still operated by full-time lightkeepers.

Award-winning
In 2023, I earned my first solo journalism award, from the BC & Yukon Community News Association. A photo I took on my drive home from work - during a record-breaking drought and under wildfire smoke - earned silver in the feature photo category at the 2023 Ma Murray awards.
